The following error message appears when printing from Windows: "Incorrect Installation; try removing the black (or color) print cartridge and reinstalling it." After selecting
OK, the HP DeskJet printer will print the document successfully, and the error message will disappear. This message may occur even if the driver successfully installs without communication error messages. The
following four steps will provide methods to resolve this error.
- Cleaning the cartridge contacts
- Cartridge replacement
- Error workaround
Instructions
Clean the contacts for ink cartridge part numbers 51629, 51649, or C1816A
- Raise the top cover of the HP DeskJet 600 series printer. The ink cartridge carriage should move to the center position.
- Remove the ink cartridge(s). Examine the copper flex circuitry on the back of the cartridge that was indicated by the error message. Ensure that the flex circuitry is fully intact
and not damaged.
- Unplug the power to the HP DeskJet 600 series printer.
- Use the instructions listed below to complete the steps for the print cartridge cleaning.
- Use a clean, foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water. Locate the copper-colored circuitry strip on the back of the cartridge.
- Clean the copper-colored strip with the dampened swab or cloth. Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the nozzle plate.
- Clean the carriage contacts on the back wall of the ink cartridge carriage with a damp, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth. Use a dry, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth to
remove the moisture from the contacts. If the carriage contacts show noticeable damage, contact HP Customer Care using the number that is listed in the printer's User's Guide.
- Plug in the power to the HP DeskJet 600 series printer and turn on the printer.
- Place the ink cartridge(s) into the carriage and snap or lock into position. With the HP DeskJet 600C series printers, a click will sound when the ink cartridge snaps snugly in the
carriage. Try printing from the computer to see if the error message still appears.
If the above steps are completed and the error message still appears, the problem is most likely internal to the print cartridge
- Replace the appropriate cartridge that is identified in the error message with a new cartridge.
- Try printing from the computer to see if the error message still appears.
- If the error message still appears, the problem, at this point, is internal to the HP DeskJet 600 series printer. Contact HP Customer Care using the number that is listed in the
printer's User's Guide.
Workaround: To continue printing, without the error being displayed, use the following steps
- Turn off bidirectional communication and print cartridge query in the HP DeskJet printer's configuration utility.
- Open the appropriate configuration file from the table below. For example, open HPFCFG16.EXE for the HP DeskJet 690C series printer.
- Deselect Bidirectional Communication, Print Cartridge Query, and (if available) Launch Toolbox when Printing.
- Select OK and restart Windows. Try printing from the computer to see if the error message still appears.
NOTE: Turning off Bidirectional Communication and Print Cartridge Query may mask other problems and is recommended only if all other troubleshooting
options do not work.
