HP Deskjet 800 Series Printers - Error Message, Incorrect Installation of Print Cartridge

Introduction
This document provides directions for HP Deskjet 800 series printers to resolve incorrect installation errors of color or black cartridges. These messages appear when the printer hardware or software has detected a problem with the installation of a print cartridge. This problem may be the result of an incomplete connection between the copper strip cartridge contacts and the contacts in the cradle assembly.

Clicking OK on the message will send the job to the HP Deskjet 800 series printer where it will print correctly. However, the next time a print job is sent, the message will reappear. The following section provides troubleshooting steps to resolve this error message.

Troubleshooting steps
Follow the steps below to troubleshoot this error message (Figure 1) that appears when a print job is sent to an HP Deskjet 800 series printer.

  1. Click Cancel Print to cancel printing.
  2. Remove both ink cartridges.
  3. Verify that the part numbers are correct.
  4. Ensure that the cartridge is not past the end of the warranty date. After the warranty period is over, electrical connections in the cartridge may begin to fail and cause the error message.
  5. The end of warranty date is found in a YYYY/MM/DD format on the print cartridge as indicated below. If the cartridges are past the warranty date, replace them. If the cartridges are within the warranty period, continue on to the next step.

  1. Unplug the electrical power to the HP Deskjet 800 series printer.
  2. Clean the contacts on the cartridge and on the cartridge cradles in the HP Deskjet 800 series printer.

Cleaning the Cartridge Contacts

To clean the contacts on a cartridge, follow the instructions below.

CAUTION: Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the nozzle plate. The contacts can be damaged if too much pressure is applied.

  • Use a clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Locate the copper-colored circuitry strip on the back of the cartridge (Figure 4).

  • Using an upward motion from the nozzle end to the top of the cartridge, wipe the copper-colored strip once with the dry cloth. Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the nozzle plate. Wipe the contacts only one time.

Cleaning the Cradle Contacts

To clean the contacts in the print cartridge cradles, follow the instructions below.

CAUTION: Do not wipe the printer contacts with anything. They can be damaged or bent if too much pressure is applied in a wiping process.

  • The contacts are the copper colored dots or pins located at the back of the cartridge cradles (Figure 5). Carefully inspect them for fibers or contamination.

  • If any debris is attached to the contacts within the cradle, remove it by gently pulling it off.
  • If the cradle contacts show noticeable damage, contact HP Customer Care using the number that is listed in the printer's User's Guide, or follow the links at the end of this document.

  1. Reconnect the electrical power to the printer.
  2. Put the cartridges in the printer by pushing each cartridge down firmly into its cradle slot.
  3. Verify that the color cartridge is on the left and the black cartridge is on the right.
  4. Close the print cartridge latch, and close the printer's top cover. The cartridges will return to their home position on the right side of the printer, and the resume light will stop flashing.
  5. Try printing again to see if the error message appears.

NOTE: The align cartridge screen will appear after the cartridges are reinstalled. Follow the instructions provided on the screen to align the cartridges. This message appears any time a cartridge is inserted in the printer.

  • If the message still appears, replace the cartridge with a new one. The part numbers are listed in the table below:
