How to Replace Cartridge(s)
Here's how to replace the toner cartridge on the Brother MFC-9800:
- Fully open the top cover and pull the drum unit assembly out of the MFC-9800.
- Put the drum unit on a cloth or large piece of disposable paper to prevent toner spill.
- Remove the old toner cartridge from the drum unit.
- Open the aluminum bag for the new toner cartridge, and then take out the cartridge.
- Gently rock the cartridge to distribute the toner inside evenly. Then, remove the protective seal.
- Install the toner cartridge by aligning it with the tracks inside the drum unit.
- Turn the lever in a clockwise direction to secure the toner cartridge into place.
- Reinsert the drum unit assembly back into the printer, and close the top cover.

The “Toner Empty" message often appears when the corona wire is dirty or when the toner cartridge or the drum unit assembly is not installed properly. Try removing the drum unit assembly from the machine. Then, remove the newly installed cartridge from the drum unit and clean the primary corona wire. After cleaning the corona wire, reinstall the toner cartridge into the drum unit. Then, shake the drum unit before inserting it back into the MFC-9800.
