Check out this useful guide on how to replace the existing ink cartridge in your HP Deskjet 3420 printer:

Turn the power on, then open the top cover.
Wait until the cradle moves and stops at the center of the printer.
Push down on the used ink cartridge and then slide it out of the cradle.
Take the new ink cartridge out of its packaging. Carefully remove its sealing tape.
Hold the new cartridge so the copper strip is on the bottom and facing toward the printer.
Slide the new cartridge firmly into the cradle at a slight upward angle. Push down on the cartridge it snaps into place.
Close the top cover.
